As we celebrate Independence Day, patriotism soars in America. U.S. flags fly high and patriotic music is played in bars and restaurants. Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” is a popular song this time of year, with its upbeat melody and its well-known chorus. Look a little deeper into the lyrics and it becomes apparent that the song is not quite as apropos to July 4th as the general assumption holds; it’s really a protest song about wars in general and Vietnam in particular. It’s a great example of a headline, or song title, not matching the underlying story.
